Growing up I always emphasized being honest. Having this character trait set me apart from people. I learned that with being honest came a responsibility to be dependable. If I said I would do something, I would do it.

After being arrested, I found being honest became a lot more important.  In high school, some other kids made fun of me for saying the truth when I could lie.  In jail people look for the opposite.  The truth is sought after here.  Being honest means people can trust me.  TRUST IS EVERYTHING.

My environment erodes mutual trust from not only other inmates but from everyone.  I have seen so many betrayals and “snitching” that at this point, I expect it from anyone new I meet.  The only comfort for my initial wariness is the actions of this new person.  It’s up to them whether or not they want to be trustworthy.

Is their word their bond?
